Week 5 - Digital Literacies
In week 5 English, language and literacy focused on Digital Literacies.
We all agreed that this area in english is very important and teachers need to be aware of the role it plays within the classroom. As society has become so dependant on technologies children are being exposed to it at very early ages as it has proven to be a very successful element of engagement. Cross curricular opportunities can be established within a unit on digital literacies which is great as students can connect its importance within their life's.
The lecture this week was highly engaging and used examples that could easily be used in a classroom. The video: Photo Booth was analysed during this lecture. A simple short film such as this had so much meaning and emotion that could not have been expressed as quickly or as effectively through plain text. Using pictures, sound and movement help the creator of a digital literacy text express deeper meaning and purpose. This overall theme continued on during this weeks workshop as he spoke about how to develop digital literacies, the types of tools of equipment needed, what digital literacies can be about and reference to assignment three which requires us to make our own digital literacy.
The homework preparation for this week - retelling a classic fairytale was a very effective exercise that stood out for me as everyone in the class had great ideas. This helped us create new story lines, settings and plots for the particular tales which all proved to be very entertaining and funny.
This week was a great introduction into the world of digital literacy and I know we will all look forward to experimenting and creating a digital piece of work that means something to us and has a deeper meaning so it can be analysed and deconstructed.

Having two young children, I am constantly reminded of the impact and inclusion of digital literacies in present times. It is very impotant that we understand the importance and usefulness of digital literacy within the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI agree that I am definitely looking forward to creating a digital story for our upcoming assignment. I have only ever read or viewed digital stories; but am looking forward to flipping the roles and creating one for others to enjoy!

This week really developed my knowledge on how digital texts develop a narrative. This was through the readings and a great example which was shown during the lecture which was a short film named 'Photo Booth'. This short film showed how a a digital text can develop a narrative through the use of props, characters, colour, sound, dialogue and camera placement in order to create meaning for the viewer. This aspect of the lecture and workshops has assisted in understanding digital texts which will help me in creating assessment 3.

The lecture, tutorial and the readings this week really helped me understand the importance of digital literacy in society today. The short film 'Photo Booth' also showed me the impact of adding colour to only specific aspects of an image or text. The readings also gave me some good ideas for the 3rd assignment.
